Coopetition, Where Do You Come From? Identification, Categorization, and Configuration of Theoretical Roots of Coopetition

Abstract: Though being 30 years old, coopetition, is still earning popularity and represents a fresh, beneficial, but paradoxical approach to inter-organizational relations. The increasing interest is gradually filling the pool of coopetition knowledge with new and interesting qualitative findings and quantitative results. Nonetheless, if we search in this pool of empirical evidence, we will not find many theoretical works, especially those devoted to definitions, conceptualization, typology, or recognition of the found… Show more

“…Coopetition has always been associated with game theory and has also been addressed in various studies (Gelei & Dobos, 2023;Rodrigues et al, 2011). Coopetition studies describe it from a game theory perspective and consider it as balanced win-win relationships (Klimas et al, 2023;Galkina & Henriksson, 2017;Salamzadeh, Hadizadeh, Rastgoo et al, 2022). Game theory can explain the behavior of firms in relation to each other in the competitive environment (Okura & Carfi, 2014).…”

“…The relevant literature base for discussing such issues is known variously as network perspectives on competitive dynamics, relational view of the firm, or embeddedness modeling (Gnyawali & Madhavan, 2001; Klimas, Ahmadian, Soltani, Shahbazi, & Hamidizadeh, 2023; Sanou et al , 2016; Zaheer & Geoffrey, 2005). The underlying assumption of such work is that firms are embedded in networks of firms.…”

“…The theoretical foundations of coopetition are varied, with prominent influences from game theory, the resource-based view (RBV), and network theory (Klimas et al, 2023). From the perspective of game theory, scholars examine coopetition as a win-win interplay, analyzing the equilibrium between value creation (pursuing collective benefits) and value appropriation (seeking individual gains).…”
