Cooperative Multi-Vessel Systems in Urban Waterway Networks

Abstract: Urban waterways have great potential in cargo transport to relieve the congestion in the overloaded road networks. This paper explores the potential of applying cooperative multi-vessel systems (CMVSs) to improve the safety and efficiency of transport in urban waterway networks. A framework consisting of vessel train formation (VTF) and cooperative waterway intersection scheduling (CWIS) is proposed. Two types of controllers are introduced. Intersection controllers solve the CWIS problems and assign each vesse… Show more

“…According to Liao [1], canal transportation has the potential to be developed as water transportation on land by utilizing canals to reduce congestion in urban areas. This was also supported by Chen et al, [2] where urban canals can also be an alternative for transportation of goods when the streets are crowded with vehicles that serve other needs. Even the canal/waterway transportation system is particularly cost effective in the transportation although it is still often underestimated as an adequate means of transportation for urban activities.…”

“…It is an inevitable trend for the coordinated motion planning control of USVs in the future, because it is difficult to complete complex tasks by relying on a single USV, and the research on the coordinated control of multiple USVs is a key point for the development of USVs formation in the future. Liu, B. et al (Liu, B. et al, 2019), Chen, L., et al (Chen, L., et al, 2019) and Li, S., et al (Li, S., et al, 2019) etc. have done some researches in this area.…”

“…Accelerations of all vehicles have bounds for the reason of that motive forces supplied by motors are limited in practice. Therefore, actuator saturation should be considered in the multivehicle cooperative system (1). The acceleration a i (t) is introduced as…”
