Cooperative Intelligence in Roundabout Intersections Using Hierarchical Fuzzy Behavior Calculation of Vehicle Speed Profile

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper, a new fuzzy-behavior-based algorithm for roundabout intersection management is presented. The algorithm employs cooperative intelligence and includes intelligent vehicles and infrastructure to calculate speed profiles for different vehicles, in order to achieve more comfortable driving profiles, as well to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions. The algorithm uses adaptive spatio-temporal reservation technique and was tested in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The algorithm is designed to fun… Show more

“…This framework ensured efficiency, safety, environment sustainability and passenger infotainment. In [322], a ST Fuzzy-based algorithm for roundabouts management using V2V and V2I communication and connected and non-CVs was proposed. The reservation was adaptive based on the vehicles speed and could reduce travel time, emissions, congestion, energy and increase driving infotainment.…”

“…Another solution based on intelligent methods is proposed in [8], where the vehicles are trained to cross a roundabout using the Q-learning algorithm. Furthermore, a solution based on fuzzy logic is proposed in [9] to compute the velocity for vehicles in order to ensure safe travel through the intersection and to decrease the emission of CO 2 . A solution that combines techniques of image processing and artificial intelligence to command the time when the vehicles can enter the roundabout is proposed in [10].…”

“…In [10], a microscopic traffic simulator was developed to study intelligent traffic management techniques and evaluate their performance at roundabouts and crossroads. In the paper [11], the fuzzybehavior-based algorithm for roundabout intersection management is presented. The various different vehicle communication types -combinations of cooperative and noncooperative vehicles as well as possibility of faulty or missing infrastructure controller were examined.…”
