La notion de « coopération transfrontalière » renvoie aux relations, aux liens et projets développés entre acteurs et organisations de part et d’autre d’une frontière pour mener des actions communes. Ce phénomène est répandu sur l’ensemble des frontières mondiales et recouvre des initiatives et des dynamiques plus ou moins formalisées ou individualisées, plus ou moins officielles ou structurées. Le cas de l’Union européenne est particulier du fait du haut degré d’institutionnalisation de la coopération transfrontalière, appuyée et parfois impulsée par les pouvoirs publics et les autorités territoriales, suivant le principe de libre circulation des biens et des personnes au sein du marché intérieur. Cet article illustre les enjeux les plus saillants de la coopération transfrontalière en Europe à l’aide d’exemples de terrain, et permet ainsi d’ouvrir des perspectives sur les possibles évolutions de ce phénomène.
