Cooperation Techniques for a Cellular Internet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Abstract: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are powerful Internet-of-Things components to provide sensing and communications in the air due to their advantages in mobility and flexibility. As aerial users, UAVs are envisioned to support various sensing applications in the next generation cellular systems, which have been studied by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). However, the Quality-of-Services (QoS) of the cellular link between the UAV and the base station may not be guaranteed when UAVs are at the cell… Show more

“…The BS can then transmit the data to the destination nodes in the backbone network, and thereby providing high reliable data transmissions. For U2U communications, two UAVs in proximity can set up a direct link bypassing the BS, which enables the UAVs to perform cooperative sensing and transmission [15]. The data rates for U2U communications can be further improved by exploiting proximity gain and underlay nature.…”

“…The combination of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and Internet services is already proposed as the concept of Internet of UAV (IoUAV) [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. The Internet and drones in specific are also related in [ 19 , 20 ] as Internet of Drones (IoD).…”

“…1. To realize the above visions, it is envisaged and studied by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) that the cellular networks are necessary for UAVs to execute sensing tasks, which we refer to as the cellular Internet of UAVs [3].…”

“…In this article, we introduce the reinforcement learning approaches and their applications in 3 the cellular Internet of UAVs. Since reinforcement learning can enable UAVs to improve their policies for their objectives without a priori knowledge of the environment, it is suitable to address the key problems in the cellular Internet of UAVs [6], such as trajectory control and resource management.…”
