Cooperation between general practitioners and occupational health physicians in Germany: how can it be optimised? A qualitative study

Abstract: In many aspects, the present data agree with results of studies from other countries addressing the cooperation between GPs and OPs and/or other specialists. Many suggestions obtained in this study are practical and could be implemented into daily routine. Future quantitative research is required to better assess the relative weight of the suggestions presented here.

“…About 16% of surveyed physicians besides working as OPs are also general practitioners suggesting that there is a fruitful collaboration between these 2 professional profiles. Nevertheless, the results of our survey (data not shown) have demonstrated the need to achieve a better cooperation between general practitioners and OPs [31][32][33]. Currently, the Italian CME program is not considered to be sufficiently adequate to ensure effective updating of OPs.…”

“…The degree of involvement of the OPs by the ERs in various activities related to the protection enter the specialty after they have worked in other specialties [29,30]. General practitioners and OPs have several overlapping work fields (preventive medicine, health promotion, rehabilitation) and consequently it is obvious that better cooperation is in the workers' interest in terms of shortening illness-associated absenteeism, improving reintegration into the workplace and preserving employability [31]. About 16% of surveyed physicians besides working as OPs are also general practitioners suggesting that there is a fruitful collaboration between these 2 professional profiles.…”

“…In Italy, as an example, after 60 days of continuous sickness absence from work, EEs have to undergo a medical examination, namely the “pre-return to work visit”. Therefore, it is evident that a good cooperation between OPs and GPs would lead to a shortening of illness-related absenteeism from work, an improving of reintegration into the workplaces and finally to a preservation of employability9 ) .…”

“…Understanding the potential and services of public health care can also focus on the occupational health services more efectively. Unfortunately, according to some studies, the cooperation between general practitioners and occupational health physicians is often lacking or sub-optimal [41].…”
