Cooperation and competition between magnetism and chemisorption

Abstract: The chemisorption energy is formulated in terms of the change in surface magnetic moments. Using such formulation, we address the question of how the strength of binding of an adsorbate depends on the surface magnetic moments and vice versa. Our results indicates a possible adsorption energy scaling relationship in terms surface magnetic moments. We also discuss the condition for the appearance of magnetism due to chemisorption on an otherwise non-magnetic surface in terms of a modified Stoner criterion.
