Conversion of Glycerol to Acrolein in the Presence of WO3/ZrO2 Catalysts

Abstract: Dehydration of glycerol to acrolein was performed on WO 3 /ZrO 2 solid heterogeneous catalysts in a continuous flow fixed bed reactor. A maximum of 75% acrolein selectivity was achieved at 100% conversion of glycerol. The acrolein selectivity correlates with the concentration of weak acidic sites of the WO 3 /ZrO 2 catalysts that were free of basic sites.

“…Supported WO 3 , MoO 3 , V 2 O 5 , and H 3 PO 4 catalysts are well known as the acid catalysts for many kinds of reactions [53][54][55][56]. For example, ZrO 2 -supported WO 3 catalyst and active carbonsupported H 3 PO 4 are effective for the dehydration of glycerol to form acrolein [53,54]; ␥-Al 2 O 3 -supported V 2 O 5 and MoO 3 are effective for the selective oxidation of methanol to form dimethoxymethane and methyl formate [55,56].…”

“…35 Although the conversion could reach 100% in some cases, the selectivity to acrylic acid was not more than 1%, with acrolein, acetaldehyde and acetol as main products. Ulgen and Hoelderich 36,37 have studied the glycerol oxydehydration over supported tungsten oxide. Although the observed conversions were high, the selectivity to acrylic acid was below 5%, with acrolein being the main product.…”
