Conversational System as Assistant Tool in Reminiscence Therapy for People with Early-Stage of Alzheimer’s

Abstract: Reminiscence therapy is a non-pharmacological intervention that helps mitigate unstable psychological and emotional states in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, where past experiences are evoked through conversations between the patients and their caregivers, stimulating autobiographical episodic memory. It is highly recommended that people with Alzheimer regularly receive this type of therapy. In this paper, we describe the development of a conversational system that can be used as a tool to provide reminisce… Show more

“…Such social and conversational LLMs can come in the shape of apps, as potentially voice enacted chat applications. More immersive social interactions might be possible when the LLMs are digitally embodied as virtual avatars (Morales-de-Jesús et al, 2021 ) or even physically embodied as robots (Lima et al, 2022 ).…”

“… Moon and Park (2020) reported that reminiscence therapy with an app that displays images related to dementia participants’ memories successfully decreased BPSD occurrence in the participants with MMSE scores of 10–19. Morales-De-jesús et al (2021) developed an interactive virtual avatar that performed automated conversational reminiscence therapy. However, they reported that the performance of its dialogues was insufficient for the participants to enjoy the conversation and to improve their cognitive functions.…”

“…Reminiscence therapy promotes the activation of memory and increases spontaneous speech through conversations with caregivers or other participants about their own past memories. Spending time to reminisce and talk about the past is expected to stabilize the elderly’s mental condition and thus suppress BPSD ( Butler, 1963 ; Moon and Park, 2020 ; Morales-De-jesús et al, 2021 ). Music therapy promotes memory stimulation and spontaneous vocalization, as in reminiscence therapy, by listening to or singing the elderly person’s favorite songs and talking about those songs with the other participants.…”
