Conversation-analytic data session as a pedagogical institution

Abstract: We draw on interaction-oriented focus group research and conversation analysis to study the conversation-analytic data session as a pedagogical institution. Drawing on focus group interviews among conversation-analytic experts and novices, we considered (1) the degree of sharedness of different normative orientations among the conversation analysts regarding the data session and (2) possible differences in how novice and expert conversation analysts orient, perceive and evaluate data-session normativity. We fo… Show more

“…As a next step, in NVIVO, we selected all clips when students used their phones and inductively categorized the clips in relation to different interactional situations. As is common in interaction studies (Stevanovic & Weiste, 2017), the analytic decisions were discussed and scrutinized in data sessions involving other researchers in the group until we agreed upon five discrete categories, presented below. From each category, one example was selected for interaction analysis using Conversation Analysis (CA).…”

“…6 Unmet concerns are a well-known problem in primary care since patients tend to arrive with several concerns but leave having only discussed the first one they had originally mentioned after the problem-solicitation question (Robinson, 2001). 7 Data sessions are also training opportunities where newer analysts can work alongside more experienced ones to learn to identify and describe interactional phenomena in procedural terms (Harris et al, 2012;Jordan & Henderson, 1995;Stevanovic & Weiste, 2017).
