Thinking skills are essential to achieve sustainable social development. Nonetheless, there is no specific instrument that assesses all of these skills as a whole. The present study aimed to design and validate a scale to assess complex thinking skills in adult people. A scale of 22 items assessing the following aspects: analysis and problem solving, critical analysis, metacognition, systemic analysis, and creativity, in five levels, was created. This scale was validated in 626 university students from Peru. In total, 16 experts in the field helped to determine the content validity of the scale (Aiken’s V value higher than 0.8). The confirmatory factor analysis allowed the evaluation of the structure of the five factors theoretically proposed and the goodness of fit indexes was satisfactory. An item was eliminated during the process and the scale resulted in 21 items. The composite reliability for the different factors was ranged between 0.794 and 0.867. The invariance between genders was also checked and the concurrent validity was proved. The study concludes that the content validity, construct validity, concurrent validity, and composite reliability levels of the COMPLEX-21 scale are appropriate.

Após a ocorrência do Acidente Vascular Encefálico (AVE), é comum a presença de deficiências residuais, com potencial impacto na utilização dos membros superiores (MMSS) na realização de atividades cotidianas, consideradas essenciais para uma vida independente. O Stroke Upper Limb Capacity Scale (SULCS) avalia a função proximal e distal dos membros superiores de indivíduos pós-AVE por meio de 10 itens, hierarquicamente ordenados, que representam tarefas significativas relacionadas às atividades diárias realizadas em ambiente domiciliar. Objetivo: Adaptar transculturalmente o SULCS para uso no Brasil. Método: O processo de adaptação transcultural foi realizado em cinco estágios, seguindo procedimentos padronizados: tradução inicial, síntese das traduções, retrotradução, comitê de especialistas e aplicação da versão pré-final em 15 indivíduos pós-AVE. Resultados: As versões original e retrotraduzida apresentaram adequada equivalência semântica. O comitê de especialistas adequou a descrição dos itens às regras gramaticais da língua portuguesa. Em um item da escala, foi acrescentada observação sobre a forma de realização da tarefa, para equivalência experimental, e realizada adaptação do material de teste em três itens, para equivalência cultural. Não foram observadas dificuldades de compreensão dos itens no teste da versão pré-final. Conclusão: O SULCS-Brasil apresentou adequadas equivalências semântica, idiomática, cultural e experimental. Os resultados desse estudo viabilizam o uso do SULCS-Brasil como uma ferramenta para avaliação da capacidade dos membros superiores de indivíduos pós-AVE. Estudos futuros são necessários para continuidade do processo de validação da escala, a partir da investigação de outras propriedades de medida, tais como validade de construto e confiabilidade.

The German version of the Stroke Upper Limb Capacity Scale: Translation, cross-cultural adaption and evaluation of its psychometric properties

Objective: To investigate the psychometric properties of a newly developed German version of the Stroke Upper Limb Capacity Scale (SULCS). Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Neurorehabilitation clinic. Subjects: Patients after stroke ( n = 50) with moderate to severe upper limb hemiparesis undergoing inpatient rehabilitation. Intervention: Not applicable. Main measures: The SULCS was administered twice by two different raters on the first day of assessments and another time the day after. Additionally the Fugl-Meyer-Assessment, Action Research Arm Test and the Box and Block Test were conducted. Three and six weeks later, the SULCS, Fugl-Meyer-Assessment and Box and Block Test were repeated. Floor and ceiling effects were analyzed. Results: Reliability was demonstrated to be excellent as displayed by weighted kappa of 0.960 (95%-confidence interval: CIκw = 0.808–1.112) for the intra-rater reliability and 0.936 (CIκw = 0.749–1.123) for the inter-rater reliability. High correlations of the SULCS with the Fugl-Meyer-Assessment (ρ = 0.889), Action Research Arm Test (ρ = 0.872), and Box and Block Test (ρ = 0.845; all P < 0.001) confirmed a high convergent validity. The longitudinal validity was determined by a moderate to high correlation of the SULCS and Box and Block Test changes (ρ ⩾ 0.695, P ⩽ 0.001). Although floor effects were observed for the SULCS (16%), they were more substantial for the Action Research Arm Test and the Box and Block Test (>38%). Conclusion: Due to the good to excellent psychometric properties and the low level of floor effects of the German version of the SULCS, the usage for clinical and scientific purposes can be recommended.
