Convergence of Dissipation and Impedance Analysis of Quartz Crystal Microbalance Studies

Abstract: A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) consists of a resonator, which measures the resonance frequency of the quartz slab. When coupled with a network analyzer or coupled with impulse excitation technology, QCM gives additional impedance or dissipation information, respectively. This report provides a set of equations that bring the QCM community a convergence of the dissipation and impedance analysis. Equations derived from the complex frequency shift were applied to quantitatively analyze the dissipation data o… Show more

“…In that model, the thickness of layer II (also called the "solidified liquid layer", Scheme 1) was determined by the thickness of a swollen biomolecule layer, such as the thickness of immobilized proteins, DNA or polymer chains. The measured frequency change was fitted [23] according to eq. (1) to separate mass-induced and viscoelasticity induced f, and then the mass-induced f was converted to mass change according to eq.…”

“…34 Furthermore, convergence relationships of dissipation analysis and the analysis based on f and HBHW, have also been reported. 35 The proposed method described here gives not only information about f r and , but also the wide-bandwidth transfer function of the resonator (with a much simpler setup than a network analyzer). Potentially, this could offer more useful information than just relying on the f r and .…”
