“…However, Brint (2001) defines selected close contemporary communities where members learn about and appreciate the individual personalities of fellow members. In these communities, shared moral cultures and common understanding about the practice of the group-its day-to-day interactions-provide a basis for solidarity, trust, and a sense of belonging (Etzioni, 2001) and collective identity (Tajfel and Turner, 1986;Brint, 2001;Magis, 2010). Efforts were made to achieve convergence to increase voice as Magis (2010) suggests, but this was temporary and was limited to a few groups. These special characteristics are important as they shape new forms of transnational activism, which imply less clear effects than are often portrayed.…”

“…Magis defines GCS as 'an ideal type to describe and explain the endeavours of civil society groups collaborating internationally to promote the public good' (Magis 2010). However, this definition is problematic as it assumes that groups tend to collaborate, rather than be at conflict, with each other.…”

“…With the exception of a few, the world's many thousands of NGO groups, when acting in isolation, have no power in the international system (Magis 2009). In addition to their insignificant size and voice, the groups can be narrowly focused on specific policy areas and highly ideological, both of which limit their comprehension of larger and related issues and diminish the capacity for the negotiations so critical in political environments (Magis 2009). Through collaboration, the groups acquire the ability to influence international decision making above and beyond their weak formal status and can use the power of the collaborative to avoid co-optation (Magis 2009).…”
