Convergence excess esotropia treated surgically with fadenoperation and medical rectus muscle recessions.

Abstract: Convergence excess esotropia has been treated with bifocals, miotics, medial rectus recession(s), fadenoperation, or a combination of these. However, comparatively few studies on the sensory status of these patients exist. We present the sensory findings in 31 children treated surgically. Age at surgery (years) 5*7 (range 2-5 to 9 0) 6-8 (range 5*5 to [7][8] Age at end of follow-up 8-1 (range 5-0 to 12-0) 9-6 (range 8-0 to 15 0)Preop. near deviation (PD) 35 6 (range 25 to >45) 32-0 (range 25 to >45) Postop. ne… Show more

“…Ambliyopi çeşitlerinin hepsinin tedavisinde ilk yapılması gereken hastanın var olan refraksiyon kusurunun tam olarak düzeltilmesidir (36). Refraksiyon kusurlarını belirlemek için mutlaka sikloplejik muayene sonrası retinoskopi ve uygun düzeltme yapılmalıdır.…”

“…These data are approaching but inferior to the sensory outcomes described by Berk for Refractive Accommodative Esotropes. 4 The maintenance of distance BSV during visual maturation is an important principle when attempting to improve on the sensory and motor outcomes from earlier studies, [18][19][20] where earlier surgery is an increasingly appealing modern-day alternative to protracted bifocal wear because it potentially offers speedier alignment but risks added complications.…”

“…Several ophthalmologists also prescribe exercises to promote dissociation between accommodation and convergence [8,9]. If near esotropia persists, after several years of using bifocal lenses, a double recession of the medial rectus muscles can solve the problem, eliminating near deviation without generating strabismus for far [10][11][12][13]. Some studies, however, published by Breinin et al [14] and subsequently von Noorden and Jenkins [15,16], indicate that even therapy with bifocal lenses is not risk-free.…”
