Demand for rich media services is rapidly increasing and, as a result, several technologies are competing to deliver rich media services to mobile, resource-constrained devices. In this paper, we explore the existing rich media technologies and analyze their key features. In addition, in order to accommodate the new requirements introduced by emerging service models, such as service convergence, these technologies must evolve from their current status. We examine how the community intends to achieve this.

Mobile Digital Television (MDTV) has increasingly become one of the key topics of interest within the DTV industry. This has been particularly successful with regards to the definition and rollout of different content and service distribution standards such as DVB-H, DMB and several others. This is in contrast to the application layer (with regards to middleware and service creation) of the MDTV system, where research and development lags behind. This paper presents work that aims at integrating the service implementation reference, the Application Model (AM), in different MDTV standards by proposing a compatible MDTV service creation process that employs XHTML and Java ME on the service presentation layer; where interactive MDTV services are created using a semi-automated service development tool. With the implementation of this process, this paper aims at developing a universal open-standard environment as an enhancement to the MDTV service development, that on one hand enables more creative and design oriented people with little technical expertise to be involved in the service creation process and on the other hand speeds up the process of creating interactive MDTV services.Index Terms-1.1 Mobile TV, 1.4 VoD, interactivity, datacasting, 2.5 Program guides and navigation.

In the array of mobile communication techniques, the application of a mobile phone combined with television is a new technique under development. As TV program is a real-time video/audio service, in comparison with either traditional video/audio file downloads or network video/audio streams, there are more technical difficulties to be overcome, in particular, how to satisfy the playback functions of TV programs in hand-held device.
