Controlling the directional emission of holey organic microlasers

Abstract: The far-field pattern of stadium-shaped organic microlasers is strongly modified by introducing circular air vacancies within the cavity, so as to control it in a predictive way. Experimental results are in good agreement with geometrical optics predictions whereas spectral properties of emission are investigated to improve the understanding of the lasing modes.

“…Alternatively, microdisks may be made by direct photo-lithography or e-beam lithography with polymers or monomers that are active to UV light or electron beam (Djellali et al, 2009;). An additional bake may follow to reflow the polymer and smooth the disk edges.…”

“…Even using the interior whispering gallery modes, the quality factors are about 6000 [112]. Another method toward unidirectional emission is introducing a defect in a symmetric cavity [113][114][115][116][117][118]. However, this approach works only for particular modes, and the existence of nearly degenerate modes with totally different far-field patterns smears out the output directionality.…”
