Controlling Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in Haiti: Implementation Strategies and Evidence of Their Success

Abstract: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) have been targeted since 2000 in Haiti, with a strong mass drug administration (MDA) program led by the Ministry of Public Health and Population and its collaborating international partners. By 2012, Haiti’s neglected tropical disease (NTD) program had reached full national scale, and with such consistently good epidemiological coverage that it is now able to stop treatment for LF throughout almost all of the country. Essential to this success have… Show more

“…In particular, tMDA campaigns need to distance themselves from the Duvalier regime interventions, notably by obtaining individuals’ consent and local support. The lymphatic filariasis elimination programme introduced in 2000 is a recent example of a well-accepted tMDA strategy based on its ability to mobilize strong community engagement and support [ 50 ]. Decentralization can also be helpful by reducing the perception that interventions are driven or imposed by foreigners coming either from Port-au-Prince or other countries [ 21 ].…”

“…As neglected tropical disease MDAs have shown in multiple countries [ 29 31 ], in order to maximize MDA participation, misconception and fears of side-effects within the target population need to be addressed at the start of the activity and frequent communication should be maintained throughout the MDA period through community education and training of health care workers [ 14 , 26 , 32 ]. This is particularly salient if several rounds of MDA were to be conducted in order to have a more lasting impact on malaria transmission.…”

“…Speculation as to the cause of this intense reaction led to the hypothesis that the study patients had antibodies to the antigen because of previous exposure from residing in an endemic area. Like the puppies, the requirement must to vaccinate human subjects prior to antigenic exposure [5].…”
