Controlled vitamin D delivery with injectable hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel for restoration of tendinopathy

Abstract: Tendinopathy is a term used to describe tendon disorders that are marked by pain and a loss of function. Recent studies demonstrated that inflammation plays an important role throughout the broad spectrum of tendinopathy. Conventional treatments such as steroid injections, analgesics, and physical modalities simply give pain relief and do not alter the disease progression without the tendon regeneration effect. Tenocytes are responsible for maintaining the tendon matrix and understanding how they function is e… Show more

“…However, PDRN is water-soluble and can aggregate in organic solvents. Therefore, to fabricate homogeneous dispersion in hydrophobic PLGA composite, we adopted a nano-emulsion-based dispersion method using Span 80 [ 26 ].…”

“…To meet needs of improvement in cell culture platforms, hydrogels to mimic ECM and microfabrication techniques to create in vivo-like microenvironments were applied to develop the platforms. Cells were grown on various hydrogels, [99][100][101][102][103][104][105] and cell differentiation and migration were studied by analyzing cells on hydrogels with stiffness alteration. 106,107 Microfluidic chips providing in vivo-like cell culture platforms were also used to study various cellular mechanisms [108][109][110][111] and even developed as organ-on-achip by mimicking features of specific organs.…”

“…13 This component activates macrophage polarization, inhibits pro-inflammatory M1-type macrophage polarization, and promotes anti-inflammatory M2-type polarization, thus inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory factors whilst exerting anti-inflammatory effects. 14,15 However, it also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and blocks nuclear factor (NF)-κb-mediated inflammatory signaling pathways to slow down the inflammatory process. 16 Recently, its anti-inflammatory ability has been validated and shown to be effective for the treatment of various musculoskeletal disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis (OA).…”
