Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) especially silver (Ag) NPs have shown immense potential in medical applications due to their distinctive physio-chemical and biological properties. This article reports the conjugation of Ag NPs with Rubus fairholmianus extract. The modification of Ag NPs was confirmed using various physico-chemical characterization techniques. The cytotoxic effect of Rubus-conjugated Ag NPs (RAgNPs) was studied by LDH assay and proliferation by ATP assay. The apoptotic inducing ability of the NPs were investigated by Annexin V/PI staining, caspase 3/7 analysis, cytochrome c release, intracellular ROS analysis, Hoechst staining and mitochondrial membrane potential analysis using flow cytometry. The expression of apoptotic proteins caspase 3, Bax and P53 were analyzed using ELISA and caspase 3, Bax using western blotting. Cells treated with 10 µg/mL RAgNPs showed an increased number of cell death by microscopic analysis compared to untreated control cells. The RAgNPs induced a statistically significant dose-dependent decrease in proliferation (p < 0.001 for 5 and 10 µg/mL) and increased cytotoxicity in MCF-7 cells. A 1.83 fold increase in cytotoxicity was observed in cells treated with 10 µg/mL (p < 0.05) compared to the untreated cells. Nuclear damage and intracellular ROS production were observed upon treatment with all tested concentrations of RAgNPs and the highest concentrations (5 and 10 µg/mL) showed significant (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) expression of caspase 3, Bax and P53 proteins. The data strongly suggest that RAgNPs induces cell death in MCF-7 cells through the mitochondrial-mediated intrinsic apoptosis pathway. The present investigation supports the potential of RAgNPs in anticancer drug development.

The development of a strategy to stabilise the cubic phase of HfO2 at lower temperatures is necessary for the emergence of unique properties that are not realised in the thermodynamically stable monoclinic phase. A very high temperature (>2600 °C) is required to produce the cubic phase of HfO2, whereas the monoclinic phase is stable at low temperature. Here, a novel rapid synthesis strategy was designed to develop highly crystalline, pure cubic-phase HfO2 nanoparticles (size <10 nm) using microwave irradiation. Furthermore, the as-prepared nanoparticles were converted to different morphologies (spherical nanoparticles and nanoplates) without compromising the cubic phase by employing a post-hydrothermal treatment in the presence of surface modifiers. The cytotoxicities and proliferative profiles of the synthesised cubic HfO2 nanostructures were investigated over the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line, along with caspase-3/7 activities. The low-temperature phase stabilisation was significantly attributed to surface imperfections (defects and deformations) induced in the crystal lattice by the desirable presence of Na2S·xH2O and NaOH. Our work provides unprecedented insight into the stabilisation of nanoscale cubic-phase HfO2 in ambient environments; the method could be extended to other challenging phases of nanomaterials.

Multimetal oxides nanocomposite photocatalysts based on Gd 2 O 2 CO 3 •ZnO•CuO were prepared by a co-precipitation method and carefully characterized using a range of analytical techniques. More specifically, analysis by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopies confirmed the identity and quality of the as-synthesized powders. The photocatalytic degradation activities of these nanocomposites towards phenanthrene were then investigated by measuring the effects of catalyst dosage, irradiation time, and oxidant addition. In addition, the pseudo first-order kinetic model was used to determine the rate constant of the degradation reaction. Optimum dosages of 0.6, 0.6, and 0.4 gL −1 were recorded when using CuO, Cu-CuO/ZnO, and Gd 2 O 2 CO 3 •ZnO•CuO, respectively. In addition, the Gd 2 O 2 CO 3 •ZnO•CuO composite exhibited a higher removal efficiency than both Cu-CuO/ZnO and the pure CuO nanoparticles. Furthermore, the addition of oxidants influenced the removal of phenanthrene from solution. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation data followed pseudo first-order kinetics as defined by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, which allowed prediction of the faster degradation rate by the Gd 2 O 2 CO 3 •ZnO•CuO nanocomposite. The newly synthesized nanocomposite could therefore be considered for the removal of phenanthrene and related polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from contaminated water.
