Controlled Switching of the Number of Skyrmions in a Magnetic Nanodot by Electric Fields (Adv. Mater. 11/2022)

Abstract: Skyrmion Clusters An electric‐field‐driven cascading transition of skyrmion clusters in a nanostructured ferromagnetic/ferroelectric multiferroic heterostructure is realized by Zhipeng Hou, Yangfan Hu, and co‐workers, as described in article number 2107908, allowing a continuous multilevel transition of the number of skyrmions in a one‐by‐one manner. Most notably, the transition is nonvolatile and reversible. These results open up a new direction for constructing low‐power‐consuming, nonvolatile, and multibit … Show more

“…[43] presents the results of experimental studies on the effects of DMI (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions at interface) on the magnetoelectric properties of Sr 2 IrO 4 /SrTiO 3 (BaTiO 3 ) (Ruddlesden-Popper structures on a pair/ferroelectric substrate), with the magnitude of the magnetoelectric coefficient and electric polarization in these structures regulated by DMI. Experimental study of magnetoelectric effects in the array of nano-dots in the composite structure of ferromagnetic-piezo-electric [Pt/Co/Ta] 12 taking into account DMI is performed in work [44]. The magnetoelectric effect is experimentally studied in the films of ferrite garnets [15,45], but in the absence of DMI.…”

“…Recently, the manipulations of magnetic skyrmions have been studied [6][7][8]. The motion of skyrmions have been realized by spin polarized currents and electric fields [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. The generation and motion of skyrmions with more efficient energy consumption methods attract much attention.…”

“…The combination of half-metallicity and topological states has attracted increasing research interest recently. In such topological half-metals, many outstanding characteristics such as high electron mobility, topological stability of bands, and spin-polarized surface states can be expected [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. These characteristics make topological half-metals potential applications in the emerging electron spin technology, which has been in full swing in recent years, using electron spins as a medium for data storage and transmission [28][29][30].…”
