BACKGROUND: This work addresses the need to better understand the crystallization kinetics and morphology of poly (ω‐pentadecalactone) (PPDL). This polyester has promising mechanical properties and a unique structure that resembles that of polyethylene. PPDL is a member of the poly(ω‐hydroxy fatty acid) family, which can be derived from biobased feedstocks. RESULTS: PPDL (Mn = 34 000 g mol−1 and dispersity D = Mw/Mn = 2.7) was synthesized using enzyme catalysis. Equilibrium melting enthalpy and equilibrium melting point were determined using extrapolation techniques, being 227 J g−1 and 101 °C, respectively. In addition, the equilibrium melting point ($T_{\rm {m}}^{0}$) was found to be 109.3 °C by the nonlinear Hoffman‐Weeks plot. For $T_{\rm {m}}^{0} = 101.0 ^{\circ}\hbox{C}$, the lateral surface free energy (σ), fold surface free energy (σe) and fold work (q) are 10.4 erg cm−2, 47.5 erg cm−2 and 2.6 kcal mol−1, respectively; while for $T_{\rm {m}}^{0} = 109.3 ^{\circ}\hbox{C}$, they are 25.1 erg cm−2, 46.6 erg cm−2 and 2.6 kcal mol−1, respectively. The results indicated the existence of a regime I to regime II transition during crystallization at about 80 °C. Polarized optical microscopy and AFM provided further evidence for the regime I–II transition. In regime I, coarse spherulites were formed through splaying out and occasional branching of lamellae, as well as stacking of lamellae through screw dislocation. In contrast, in regime II, banded spherulites were formed through crystal twisting. CONCLUSION: Morphological changes in PPDL at spherulitic and lamellar levels in regimes I and II were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry, POM and AFM. The synthesis of biomaterial poly(ω-pentadecalactone)(PPDL) with yttrium isopropoxide as initiator in bulk was explored for its industrial-scale production. The weight-average molecular weight( w M ) of PPDL could be controlled by the molar ratio of monomer to initiator(M/I), polymerization temperature(T p ) and period(t p ). The synthesis conditions were optimized, and a high w M of 9.2×10 4 of PPDL could be obtained by the reaction at an M/I molar ratio of 1000/1 and 100 °C for only 30 min, which presented tough properties with a tensile strength of about 20 MPa and an elongation at break of about 300%. This mechanical property was comparable to that of high density polyethylene(HDPE). The melting point was about 96 °C, and 5% of mass loss temperature(T 5% ) was as high as 340 °C. Thus, the PPDL with good mechanical properties and high thermal stability can be synthesized without solvent at low expenses.

Biodegradable and biocompatible aliphatic polyesters have a great potential as biomaterials and environmentally friendly thermoplastics. An intensive research effort has been devoted to living or at least controlled ring opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones, lactides, and glycolides that contributes enormously to macromolecular engineering of these aliphatic polyesters. The recent progress in the field has been reviewed and discussed in terms of structure/nature of the polymerization promoters. A first section focuses on organometallic initiators and catalysts, with emphasis on the more efficient aluminum, tin, and yttrium alkoxides. Special attention is also paid to the steroselective ROP of D , L ‐ and meso ‐lactide into polylactide of controlled tacticity. Contamination of the final polyesters by metallic residues is a drawback, which is now tackled by grafting metal alkoxides onto solid supports. The second section is dedicated to ROP mediated by enzymes, which is a very attractive strategy. Finally, “all organic” processes have been recently worked out, which are very promising for the synthesis of aliphatic polyesters free from any metallic contaminants.
