Controlled failure design of drillstring threaded connections

Abstract: The threaded connection of the type used in hydrocarbon exploration is a critical component of the drillstring that is highly susceptible to fatigue damage. Fatigue crack growth can either lead to a catastrophic failure of the connection, known as a twist‐off, or can be a non‐critical failure, known as a wash‐out. The design philosophy of Controlled Failure Design has been used in order to promote a ‘friendly’ non‐critical failure in the connection, by the controlled application of compressive residual stresse… Show more

“…In the 20th century, with the advancement of manufacturing technology, the comprehensive performance of drill pipe joint has greatly improved, and low stress brittle fracture failure has been effectively controlled. Statistical data shows that 65% to 75% of drill pipe joint failures are related to fatigue [12,13]. Zhi et al put forward the common failure causes of drill pipe internal thread joint cracking, perforation leakage, drill pipe body piercing fracture and so on, and puts forward some relevant suggestions in view of these factors [14].…”

“…In offshore applications, those connections are subjected to cyclic loads due to currents, the tide, movement of the oil platform... For drill strings the most common (between 65% and 75% [1][2][3]) failure modes of threaded connections are caused by fatigue. Failure of the connection is a costly problem in the oil and gas industry and it has a serious impact on the environment.…”

“…The benefits of compressive residual stresses in enhancing fatigue performance are well known. Screw thread roots, shaft fillets and many other machine details are routinely cold rolled for this reason, and improvements in resistance to fatigue crack initiation by a factor of up to five fold are not uncommon (Knight et al, 2003(Knight et al, , 2004(Knight et al, , 2005. Features of residual stresses in metals are that they are often transient in nature and can relax under cyclic loading and at high temperature.…”
