Controlled decoration of the surface with macromolecules: polymerization on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM)

Abstract: Polymer functionalized surfaces are important components of various sensors, solar cells and molecular electronic devices. In this context, the use of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation and subsequent reactions on the surface have attracted a lot of interest due to its stability, reliability and excellent control over orientation of functional groups. The chemical reactions to be employed on a SAM must ensure an effective functional group conversion while the reaction conditions must be mild enough to re… Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, there is hardly any report to employ fullerenes directly in "click" polymerization to obtain polytriazoles with multiple fullerene units containing thiophenes. Only recently we reported that thiophene-based polytriazoles [13] and polyacetylenes [14] could be synthesized on flat surfaces using a graft through approach on self-assembled monolayer (SAM) [15,16]. However, the studies were focussed on flat surfaces which were distinctly different from curved surfaces like fullerenes.…”

“…The Ā«graftingā€fromĀ» method allows to obtaining CPLs with different chelating units, in particular, amidoxime, IDA, acetylsalicylic acid, crown ethers, anthranilic acid, etc. Polymerization on grafted selfā€assembled monolayers (SAM) makes it possible to control the decoration of the surface with macromolecules …”
