Controllable Processing Times in Project and Production Management: Analysing the Trade-Off between Processing Times and the Amount of Resources

Abstract: The amount of resources assigned to a task highly influences its processing time. Traditionally, different functions have been used in the literature in order to map the processing time of the task with the amount of resources assigned to the task. Obviously, this relation depends on several factors such as the type of resource and/or decision problem under study. Although in the literature there are hundreds of papers using these relations in their models or methods, most of them do not justify the motivation… Show more

“…That is to say, the duration objective has a positive impact on the realization of engineering harmony. This result verifies the research of Fernandez-Viagas & Framinan (2015), Russell et al (2015) and other scholars. The project involves multiple interests, including the owner, constructer and supervisor, which not only requires construction quality assurance of the project construction, but also requires timely completion and guarantee of construction period.…”

“…In the context of fierce competition in the engineering field, failure to complete the project in time may damage the credibility of the designer and the contractor, and the expected target may also be affected by construction delay. It can be seen that the realization of the construction period target is of great significance for promoting engineering harmony (Fernandez-Viagas & Framinan, 2015). Time buffer can alleviate the changes caused by the complexity of engineering and the uncertainty of external environment (Russell, Liu, Howell, & Hsiang, 2015).…”

“…To do this end, a cuckoo search algorithm is developed and results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperformed the genetic algorithm. Fernandez‐Viagas and Framinan studied a multiskilled human‐resource‐scheduling problem considering controllable processing time for activities. They analyzed the trade‐off between processing time and the number of resources.…”

“…Although in the literature there are hundreds of papers using these relation over another one. In some cases, even wrong justifications are given and, hence, infeasible or non appropriated relations have been applied for the different problems (Fernandes-Viagaz, Framinan, 2015) [28]. In order to promote business process management, it is necessary to have an organizational approach that defines the necessary tasks of the processes, projects, day-to-day execution, and learning-related tasks.…”
