Control Theoretic Modelling and Design of Admission Control Mechanisms for Server Systems

Abstract: The admission control mechanism is an important part of many communication systems. In this paper we investigate load control mechanisms for server systems, that is systems that may be modelled as queueing systems. We show how control theory can be used when designing controllers for a G/G/1-system, in this case a PI-controller and an RST-controller. These controllers, both commonly used in automatic control are compared with one static controller and one step controller, both commonly used in telecommunicatio… Show more

“…Some of them present non-linear aspects of transfers in order to set up a simulation system, while other ones try to find the conditions of stability. The nonlinear analysis of network nodes [13], [14], [15] is a separate important research area. Many papers have theoretically analyzed computer networks in framework of feedback control theory based on the continuous time model ( [16], [17], [18]) or discrete-time model (such as [19] and [20]).…”

“…For this system, the simple fluid flow models used in [16] and [24] are not applicable. We extend the investigations presented in the conference papers [17] and [18]. We develop and validate a control theoretic model of a GI/G/1-system that can be used for the design of CPU load controllers.…”

“…For example, load-balancing strategies based on response times are to be avoided when a replica control strategy that bounds the response times is used [11]. This is not only true for brownout, but for every technique that enforces bounded response times [5,6], like admission control policies [26,38].…”
