Control system performance measures: Past, present, and future

Abstract: accepting or rejecting a system design on the basis of this number. In a mathematical sense, this number is a metric, since it gives the "distance" between two functions. The actual process of selecting which metric is to be used to "measure the distance" between a desired output time-function and an approximation to the desired function is, of course, the major difficulty. It is here that a certain amount of personal opinion is found. Surely the choice should be governed by usefulness, in that the particular … Show more

“…Similarly, the integral of the absolute error (IAE) or the integral of the squared error (ISE) can also be used. However, ITAE produces smaller oscillations compared to IAE and ISE, and it also includes the "time" term [48]. Therefore, ITAE has been chosen as the criterion of comparison.…”

“…Population size (n) and the iteration number (N) for both of the controller tuning processes are set to 10 and 20, respectively. Since ITAE criteria of which mathematical description given below provides a smaller overshoot and reduced oscillations than the other error-based performance indexes, it is used as an objective function [22,23]. …”

“…it has the best selectivity. The ITSE (integral time-square error) index is somewhat less sensitive and is not comfortable computationally [15], [16]. Since it is not practicable to integrate up to infinity, the convention is to choose a value of T sufficiently large so that e(t) for t > T is negligible.…”
