Control of the size and density of ZnO-nanorods grown onto graphene nanoplatelets in aqueous suspensions

Abstract: Zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO-NRs) with high density and chemical purity were grown onto unsupported graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) in aqueous suspensions, using two different growth approaches namely: a hydrothermal method and ultrasonic probe sonication. The size and density of the ZnO-nanorods grown onto graphene nanoplatelets were controlled through seed layer deposition and through the proper setting of the process parameters, in particular through the control of the fluidodynamics of the colloidal suspension d… Show more

“…Pristine ZnO-NRs were produced through the thermal decomposition of zinc acetate di-hydrate and successive probe sonication as described in our earlier works [32,34]. ZNGs were produced by directly growing ZnO-NRs onto unsupported GNPs in aqueous suspensions through a facile hydrothermal method [35]. …”

“…ZnO-NRs-decorated GNPs (ZNGs) are a novel class of engineered nanomaterials in which pristine GNPs are densely decorated with ZnO-NRs through a facile hydrothermal method [35]. In this study, the intriguing antimicrobial activity of ZNGs dispersed in water was compared with the one of colloidal suspensions containing either pristine GNPs or ZnO-NRs or both GNPs and ZnO-NRs.…”

“…GNPs were produced by thermal expansion at 1050 • C for 30 s of commercially available Graphite Intercalation Compound (GIC), and successive liquid-phase exfoliation by probe sonication [25]. About the synthesis of ZnO-NR-decorated graphene nanoplatelets (ZNGs), rod shaped ZnO-NRs, with a diameter of~36 nm and length in the range of 300-400 nm, were directly grown over the planar shaped pristine graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), forming ZNGs [27]. Aqueous colloidal suspensions of ZNGs were prepared through the dispersion of ZNG powder in ultrapure and sterilized deionized water using probe ultrasonication.…”

“…It has been shown that ZnO can efficiently be grown on the GNPs surface, despite of their hydrophobicity [18][19][20][21]. The key parameter for growing heterostructures, is the lattice mismatch between the different materials.…”

“…The presence of oxygen (O) is almost 60 at% higher than Zn in the samples. This excess of O could be related to the hydroxyl groups OHand/or carboxyl groups -COOH, or to adsorbed water on the GNPs or ZnO surfaces during the synthesis [21].…”
