“…Li et al, 2018;J. Moreover, maize Silkless 1 (SK1), a peroxisomal UDP-glycosyltransferase that suppresses JA accumulation, is also involved in sex determination (Hayward et al, 2016). By contrast, the Arabidopsis opr3 mutant is male sterile (Sanders et al, 2000), and the maize opr7 opr8 double mutant is defective in sex determination and defense (Yan et al, 2012).…”

“…1), which functions in reproductive development and during wound and defense responses (for review, see Wasternack and Hause, 2013). For example, a maize peroxisomal JA-modifying enzyme controls sex determination (Hayward et al, 2016). Moreover, wounding increases ACX1 and PED1 transcript levels (Cruz Castillo et al, 2004) and Arabidopsis acx1, aim1, and ped1 mutants fail to produce JA after wounding (Cruz Castillo et al, 2004;Delker et al, 2007).…”

“…SILKLESS 1 ( SK1 ) is a classic maize gene in the sex differentiation pathway recently shown to encode a UDP‐glycosyltransferase (Hayward et al, ). sk1 mutants have aborted upper flowers and no silks, indicating that SK1 protects upper flowers in the ear from abortion (Calderon‐Urrea & Dellaporta, ).…”

“…Given these results, as well as the wide range of JA functions in plant development (Gundlach et al, 1992;Creelman & Mullet, 1995), it is possible that TS2 homologs have more general roles in development in grasses outside the Panicoideae and there are alternative genetic controls of unisexuality in other grasses (Malcomber & Kellogg, 2006). SILKLESS 1 (SK1) is a classic maize gene in the sex differentiation pathway recently shown to encode a UDPglycosyltransferase (Hayward et al, 2016). sk1 mutants have aborted upper flowers and no silks, indicating that SK1 protects upper flowers in the ear from abortion (Calderon-Urrea & Dellaporta, 1999).…”
