Control of Power Converters With Hybrid Affine Models and Pulse-Width Modulated Inputs

Abstract: In this paper, hybrid dynamical systems theory is applied to the analysis and control of switched converters with Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) inputs. The system is described by a state-space model with continuous flows and discrete jumps, without averaged equations. The modulation effects are captured in full without using time-dependent signals, by enlarging the state vector to include the PWM waveform generation process. Furthermore, the sample-and-hold mechanism associated with the sampling frequency is als… Show more

“…In [21], the analysis and design of a min-type strategy to control a synchronous boost converter in continuous conduction mode are proposed. In [22], to control the converter, a PWM control algorithm is designed, starting from a hybrid model and using an approach based on the averaged state space model, having the duty-cycle as an input variable.…”

“…This leads to different conditions, as will be shown in the paper. Moreover, the control strategy proposed in this manuscript follows a different approach from the one described in [18], [19], [20], [22], where a PWM modulation is proposed, as it foresees that the power switch is controlled at a variable frequency and therefore requires a greater calculation and implementation effort. At the same time, the proposed variable frequency control strategy allows for obtaining better performances in transient behavior.…”

“…Several different theoretical frameworks have been adopted to solve this task. For instance, in [4] a hybrid systems approach was applied to the analysis and control of switched converters with PWM inputs. Discontinuous sliding mode control for DC/DC converters control was deeply discussed in [5], where the discontinuous signal generated by first-order Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is directly applied to the converter switches, avoiding the PWM modulation.…”
