Control of Polyaniline Particle Shapes

Abstract: Needle‐like poly(aniline p‐toluenesulfonic acid) complex aggregates were synthesized by oxidative polymerization, yielding conductivities of up to 3 S · cm−1 and maximum aspect ratios of 26. Rod‐like aggregates as precursors to be developed into needle‐like aggregates were obtained with 1 to 2 h APS addition time at 15 °C. Flake‐like polyanilines were prepared at −2 or +20 °C with 1.9 to 2.5 h of APS addition time, giving aspect ratios of 2 to 10. Plate‐like polyaniline aggregates emerged when xylene was added… Show more

“…It can be a useful component in potential applications like supercapacitor, gas sensor, corrosion inhibitor, EMI shielding, and so forth, owing to its wide range of electrical conductivity, environmental stability, low cost of synthesis, and so forth. PAni can be synthesized in different methods, for example, oxidative polymerization process, electrochemical polymerization, interfacial polymerization, solid state polymerization (mechanochemical), and so forth. Properties of PAni vary with process parameters .…”

“…As shown in the UV-vis spectra (Fig. 3a), three main peaks at 278, 342, and 623 nm appeared in the curve of 11PANI, in which the peaks at 278 and 342 nm were assigned to the π–π* transitions within the quinoid and benzenoid functional groups, respectively, 29–31 while the peak at 623 nm was the n–π* transition of the quinoid functional groups. 32 By contrast, for the characteristic curve of 51PANI, its peaks at 278 and 623 nm were blue-shifted to 274 and 526 nm, respectively, and in particular, the absorbance at 274 nm was significantly enlarged.…”
