The vision system is developed to reduce the human effort and improve productivity in the Vehicle Quality Assurance (VQA) shop for inspection of a car bearing a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), assigned to it at the assembly shop. This project work is carried out in association with M/s Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd, Chennai. The vision system consists of a camera fixed on a pan-tilt camera frame and an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. The camera frame is mounted on a belt conveyor with remote control of forward, backward and tilting motion. The image of VIN present at the car door is captured through a digital camera placed adjacent to the car. The characters in the VIN image thus obtained are extracted using MATLAB, with configurable OCR software. Template matching method is followed in the OCR process. The MATLAB code can overcome trivial issues in VIN image inspection at the quality shop. Development of a graphic user interface to the software is also described.

：A bridge structure may sustain damage either when subjected to severe loading like a strong earthquake or when its material deteriorates. Monitoring the structural health of a particular structural system involves a damage identification process that comprises detecting, locating, identifying type of, and estimating severity of, damage. The aim of this paper attempts to utilize frequency response function (FRF) as index in SHM for locating and estimating severity of damage to bridge structures. First, a numerical study, based on SAP2000 software, is employed to create simulated damage cases including single and multi-site(s) damage scenarios. Following, a novel FRF curvature method is developed and applied to locate damage. The simulation and experiment results expose that the proposed FRF index can locate damage correctly in single as well as multi-site(s) damage acceptably.

Noise may have a negative impact on humans health and well being. Noise is a direct result of the vibration of structures. Many industrial workers and people using household appliances may be exposed to these harmful factors. To minimize their negative consequences, different approaches to noise and vibration reduction may be applied, e.g., active, semi-active or passive methods. In this research, a semi-active approach to vibration reduction of a cubic rigid casing enclosing a noise- and vibration-generating device is presented. One of the casing walls consists of double thin steel panels, coupled with the use of electromagnetic dampers—solenoids installed in the space between the panels. Other casing walls are built of single plywood panels. Vibrations of the outer (radiating) panel of the wall are measured by Macro-Fiber Composite patches. Spectral analysis of structure vibration is carried out to identify the benefits of the proposed coupling solution in terms of vibration reduction of the wall. The frequency range, where vibration reduction is observed, depends on the number of activated solenoids and the duty cycle of a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal. Advantages and drawbacks of the proposed method are discussed and future improvements of the examined setup are suggested.
