Control of green apple aphid (Aphis pomi De Geer) in organic apple production

Abstract: SuMMARYThe efficacy of different methods for controlling populations of green apple aphid (Aphis pomi De Geer) in organic apple orchard was compared over three consecutive years. The following three control methods were tested: a) predator activity (Coccinela septempunctata), b) predator activity (C. septempunctata) + selective spraying of trees with infestation level exceeding 10% with a botanical insecticide (NeemAzal T/S), and c) predator activity (C. septempunctata) + total spraying of all orchard trees wi… Show more

“…Amongst insect pests, apple aphid (aphis pomi) and beetles (Altica foliaceae and Nemognatha scutellaris) were the most common insect pests of apple. Parallel to the finding by Milenković et al [15], throughout the assessed fields, apple aphid was severe on nursery seedlings and young plantations as succulent plant parts are more appealing to sucking insects. Moreover, aphid pressure was lessened in 2014 compared to the previous season.…”

“…A commonly used procedure aimed at controlling aphids is based on the application of synthetic insecticides [22] such as spirotetramat. This chemical is highly effective against various pest species, such as Dysaphis plantaginea, Eriosoma lanigerum, Aphis spiraecola and Aphis pomi [23].…”
