Control of doubly-fed reluctance generators for wind power applications

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe paper deals with flux and voltage vector oriented control of a transpiring brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (BDFRG) technology for grid-connected wind turbines. The BDFRG features the low operation & maintenance costs by using a fractional inverter, and offers the high reliability of brushless structure at competitive performance to its popular slip-ring companion, the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). The relative experimental results for the two parameter independent speed an… Show more

“…2 leads to inherently decoupled control of T e and Q through i sq and i sd by removing the problematic VOC cross-coupling terms from (7) and (8). If left uncompensated, the latter can severely deteriorate the VOC response quality, particularly with smaller machines, as experimentally verified in [27]- [30]. The FOC approach is therefore more generic and applicable to a range of machine sizes from this point of view.…”

“…Significant contributions to the early VOC research [17] have been recently made with the comparative development and comprehensive practical studies of the two robust VOC and FOC techniques for the adjustable speed BDFRM (e.g. motoring) [27], [28] and the BDFRG [29], [30] under both constant [29] and variable loading conditions [27], [28], [30]. Similar realistic computer simulations of WECS using a 2 MW BDFRG design from [7] have been documented in [8].…”

“…In that direction, the different forms of electrical conversion result very important in the energy processing. Thus, the appropriate supply of multiple applications of the new energy forms is achieved [5][6][7][8][9][10]. In such applications, some involving motion generations are found whose operation is reduced to the design of drivers for motors (see [11,12]).…”

“…The theoretical considerations of the VC concept in [2], [23] have not been supported by true measurements. Further efforts and important practical advances have been made in [27]- [29] with a comparative performance analysis of the two robust VOC and FOC methods for the small BDFRM [27] and the BDFRG [28], [29], [34] under both speed independent [28], [34] and variable loading conditions [27], [29], [34]. Similar, but computer simulation, VC studies for a 2 MW BDFRG wind turbine have been published in [5].…”

“…As such, it has been intensively investigated for commercial DFIGs or SGs [6] as well as the emerging BDFIG [24]- [26] and BDFRG [1], [2], [5], [23], [27]- [29], [34] substitutes. A VOC algorithm for motoring (BDFRM) and generating (BDFRG) regimes of the machine has been firstly proposed, simulated and implemented in [1].…”
