Digital Clay is an NSF funded project for human machine communication through a tangible haptic surface actuated using fluid power. Digital Clay's hardware can be divided into three subsystems: massive-integrated actuator-sensor array, fluidic driving system, and control system. Focus of this paper is the control of some of the special mechanisms of Digital Clay. Specifically, the Fluid Matrix Drive, Capacitive-Coupled Resistive Sensing technology for position feedback and the other control related issues are discussed. Analysis and testing results on these topics are provided based on a 5x5 actuator array prototype. Most of the topics discussed in this paper are widely applicable to other devices as well as Digital Clay.

Digital Clay is a proposed novel three-dimensional computer input and output device for surface shape and haptic effects. The device consists of an array of fluidic actuators under the control of valves connected to two pressure reservoirs in a manner ultimately suitable to an implementation in MEMS technology. The challenges to build this device lie in both the kinematical structure design and the control architecture. Though it is proposed to ultimately build the actuators and control valves using MEMS technology, conventional methods are used at the current prototype stage. In this paper, several designs of the practical kinematical structure will be discussed and the proposed control architecture for the Digital Clay will be introduced.

The quality of coated paper is strongly affected by the base sheet. Normally, cross direction controls of the paper machine minimize dry weight, moisture and caliper variations of the base sheet. This strategy does not, however, guarantee optimal CD properties of the final coated product. To optimize the properties of coated paper, the demands of the coating process should be taken into account when planning the controls for the base sheet. The variations in the base paper and final product properties cannot be minimized at the same time. Therefore it is necessary to have a coordinated control that takes into account the effects of the base paper properties on the coated product. The coordination is based on finding a trade-off between the different control criteria. This can be realized by a higher level supervisory system that computes set profiles for the individual control stations according to priorities given by the operator. The potential benefits of coordinated control were examined by simulation. A mill trial was completed to identify the response models needed in simulation. The results show clearly that considerable improvement can be achieved by utilizing coordinated control.
