The objective of the present review is to evaluate the therapeutic potential of phytochemicals against arthritis, which is asymptomatic disorder of chronic joint inflammation followed by swelling and pain. Here, we discussed about the anti-arthritic activity of many phytomolecules such as Norisoboldine, Berberine, Triptolide, Hesperidin Hesperidin, Madecassocide, Hydroxy napthoquinone, Ginsenoside, Cryptotanshinone, Kirenol, Thymoquinone, Chlorogenic acid, Curcumin, Bromelain, Andrographolide and Allicin. These compounds are able to control inflammatory responses, proinflammatory cytokines, osteoclast differentiation and to prevent bone erosion in the joints. In this article, we reviewed anti-arthritic activities of phytichemicals from 2011-2019, using various scientific websites like PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct etc. Till date clinical trials conducted with anti-arthritic phytomolecules are very less. Hence, more clinical trials are needed to bring plant molecules as safe and effective anti-arthritic drugs in the market, either alone or in combination with other anti-arthritic agents.

Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune inflammatory disorder is characterized by progressive cartilage erosion leading to joint destruction, pain, stiffness, and swelling. Although the etiology of the disease is unknown, genetic changes due to factors such as environmental agents, immune response towards infectious agents influence rheumatoid arthritis. Earlier NSAIDs were the first choice of drugs for the treatment of disease but due to having certain side effects and limitations, herbal therapies which possess higher efficacy and safety are now in demand. There are hundreds of plants that have phytoconstituents that exhibit anti-inflammatory activity. A combination of plants is used to make polyherbal formulations that act synergistically to give anti-arthritic activity. The review is about the botanicals and traditional formulations which have been clinically tested for the treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis.

Eclipta alba (Family-Asteraceae) is a herb commonly used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of inflammation, pain, and wounds. The present study is aimed to validate the ethnobotanical use of Eclipta alba in an animal model. The animals were induced with arthritis by injection of FCA on day 0 and treated with wedelolactone rich fractions of Eclipta alba (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) from day 12 to day 28. WEA caused a significant effect in arthritis by inhibiting the joint inflammation and decreasing hyperalgesia and allodynia. WEA significantly decreased the biochemical markers and serum Tumor Necrosis factor-α, Interleukin 1β and Interleukin-6 levels and significantly increased the antioxidant profile. WEA (400 mg/kg) exhibited antirheumatic activity as evidenced by altered hematological milieu (ESR, CRP, WBC, RBC and Hb), histopathology of ankle joints, reduced cytokine levels, paw volume and related parameters associated with arthritis. Taken together, these results demonstrated the antiarthritic activity of WEA against experimental arthritis, and the underlying mechanism behind this efficacy might be mediated by inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines by wedelolactone in combination with other phytoconstituents.
