Control Methods for Standalone and Grid Connected Micro-Hydro Power Plants With Synthetic Inertia Frequency Support: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: The penetration of renewable energy sources on a large scale in conventional electric networks increases exponentially for environmental preservation. However, the increase in RESs leads to some technical problems that include (a) fluctuations in power production, (b) less or no generation units for power balancing, (c) reduced inertia due to RESs decoupling from the conventional grid using converters. Micro-hydro power plants (MHPPs) are emerging as a mature balancing technology and a great alternative to lar… Show more

“…Renewable energy can replace existing energy sources as they depend on natural energy sources that are perpetual and do not deplete. Power generated from renewable energy is primarily sourced from solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal [4][5][6][7]. Advanced countries have been developing power generation technologies that use renewable energy sources and pursue various demonstration projects to promote their spread [8][9][10].…”

“…The machine solutions proposed for variable-speed hydropower plants (VSHPs) are converter-fed synchronous machines (CFSMs) [4], [8] and doubly-fed induction machines (DFIMs) [9]- [14], respectively. The CFSM is usually interfaced with a back-to-back (B2B) full-rated converter, which connects the VSHP to the power grid [15]. The common and the machine-side converter (MSC).…”
