Control expectancies as predictors of psychotherapy outcome: A systematic review

Abstract: The study of control expectancies in psychotherapy has been neglected in the past years probably due to mixed results. The main reasons for inconsistency can be found in the scarcity of specific assessment measures for treatment expectancies as well as in the limited knowledge about process variables in the past. Implications for future control expectancies research are discussed, and a new rating scale is proposed as a possible tool for measuring control expectancies in the specific context of psychotherapy.

“…These findings are consistent with a wealth of medical literature, which reports an association between positive expectancy and non-specific treatment effects (Harrington 1999; Stewart-Williams and Podd 2004). While expectancy may be considered a component of the placebo response, it is also closely related to motivation and may direct intentions and behavior (Delsignore and Schnyder 2007; Maddux et al 1986; Wigfield 1994). Thus, expectancy may be an important component of the treatment effect that should be included in future research on the psychological mechanisms of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.…”

“…The literature describes patients’ attitude about treatment outcome as “expectancies of improvement or expectancies of usefulness/helpfulness” of the treatment 1 2. Whether it is direct clinical care or participating in a clinical trial, patients make choices about what treatment they engage in.…”

“…Standardized measures, such as the locus of control questionnaires developed by Rotter (1966) or Levenson (1973) could have been used, but preference was given to an open-ended question. In a review of the psychometric characteristics of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales, Wallston (2005), advises that researchers should be very careful when working with these instruments as the theoretical relationship between beliefs and constructs is extremely complex when generalizations are made about new situational contexts (Delsignore & Schnyder, 2007).…”
