In sub-Saharan Africa, most transmission of mosquito-transmitted diseases, such as malaria or dengue, occurs within or around houses. Preventing mosquito house entry and reducing mosquito production around the home would help reduce the transmission of these diseases. Based on recent research, we make key recommendations for reducing the threat of mosquito-transmitted diseases through changes to the built environment. The mnemonic, DELIVER , recommends the following best practices: (i) D oors should be screened, self-closing and without surrounding gaps; (ii) E aves, the space between the wall and roof, should be closed or screened; (iii) houses should be L ifted above the ground; (iv) I nsecticide-treated nets should be used when sleeping in houses at night; (v) houses should be V entilated, with at least two large-screened windows to facilitate airflow; (vi) E nvironmental management should be conducted regularly inside and around the home; and (vii) R oofs should be solid, rather than thatch. DELIVER is a package of interventions to be used in combination for maximum impact. Simple changes to the built environment will reduce exposure to mosquito-transmitted diseases and help keep regions free from these diseases after elimination. The circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in endemic regions of dengue fever and its confluence with DENV has been a reason for study. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological characteristics of the simultaneous circulation of both viruses in an endemic region and estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in patients with dengue infection. A retrospective search of epidemiological databases of both diseases was performed. The records in both databases were classified as Co-infection and reinfection, non-simultaneous infection, and initial dengue diagnosis. The estimated prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in individuals with dengue was 2%. No significant differences were observed in relation to the frequency of symptoms in patients with co-infection versus those with SARS-CoV-2 infection. SARS-CoV-2 was more frequent in non-simultaneous infections as a first infection followed by dengue acquired during the COVID-19 lockdown. Co-infections with both viruses occur in populations from dengue-endemic regions. Due to the similarity of symptoms during the first days of infection, it is important to study the clinical and epidemiological characteristics to reach an opportune diagnosis.

Mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, carried by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, pose significant health threats. Controlling these diseases primarily involves reducing mosquito populations. Current approaches rely on simplistic measures to decide on actions like mosquito fogging or larval control. Adult mosquito numbers are often estimated from aquatic populations due to easier counting. While these methods have provided some assistance, there's a need for improvement. Existing risk and population models overlook the various developmental stages of Aedes aegypti and their complex interactions. In this work, several mathematical models for the life cycle of the Aedes aegypti in its aquatic phase are proposed. They consider the different aquatic developmental stages and differ in how the competition between the stages occurs. Then, all the models are discriminated against experimental data to select the one with the best predictive power. The chosen model will help estimate the adult mosquito population with a greater degree of precision as well as when they will emerge. It will also help design better control strategies and better risk indices.
