Control Algorithms of Shunt Active Power Filter for Harmonics Mitigation: A Review

Abstract: Current harmonics is one of the most significant power quality issues which has attracted tremendous research interest. Shunt active power filter (SAPF) is the best solution to minimize harmonic contamination, but its effectiveness is strictly dependent on how quickly and accurately its control algorithms can perform. This manuscript reviews various types of existing control algorithms which have been employed for controlling operation of SAPF. Harmonic extraction, DC-link capacitor voltage regulation, current… Show more

“…Under such circumstance, the pure sinusoid cannot be obtained correctly which causes degradation in the system performance [5]. As a consequence, it may not be possible to reduce the grid-current total harmonic distortion (THD) to less than 5%, as specified by the IEEE 519-1992 standard.…”

“…Voltage Source Inverters are the most commonly used inverters. Multilevel Inverters have the advantage of enabling an improved Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) quality and a simple voltage sharing [7], harmonic mitigation is also of interest [11,12]. Their disadvantages are the neutral-point voltage balancing that can become difficult and complex control circuits.…”

“…The primary operation of power converters depends on the control modulation strategies for controlling parameters such as switching losses, THD of the output current or voltage, amplitude, frequency and phase synchronization, sudden dynamic response, and power factor correction [151]. Generally, APF control is divided into two sections [152], specifically, reference signal estimation technique.…”
