Background Mining is a global industry and contributes significantly to international economies. This study seeks to compare the patterns of psychological distress, job demand-control, and associated characteristics between two countries (Australia/Ghana) to increase understanding of cross-cultural factors relevant to mental health in this industry. Method A cross-sectional study design was used. Eight coal mines in Australia and five gold mines in Ghana. A total of 2622 mineworkers participated in this study. Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), the Berkman-Syme Social Network Index (SNI) and help-seeking questionnaire. Results Ghanaian mineworkers reported increased psychological distress compared to Australian mineworkers; Job demands outweighed control among Ghanaian mineworkers but was associated with lower risk of psychological distress compared to Australian mineworkers; Ghanaian mineworkers were significantly less likely to drink alcohol at risky levels but this was associated with higher psychological distress; Increased social network was associated with decreased psychological distress for both countries. Conclusions These findings identify cultural and geographical differences in the socio-demographics, workplace factors, psychological distress, and alcohol use in both countries. Cross-cultural occupational workplace factors and mental health issues are highlighted. Potential workplace interventions applicable in comparable settings are recommended.

Mental fatigue among coal mining operators was related to driving activities that require high concentration. This study aimed to determine factors that contributed to mental fatigue among coal mine operators in Indonesia, specifically in Kalimantan and Sumatra, after a one-year COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 480 operators from two companies and seven sites. A self-administrated questionnaire in the Google Form was used to measure mental fatigue, the non-work-related factors (age, education, marital status, residence, and stress level), and work-related factors (working periods, shift pattern, type of shift, and work area in mining). The data analyzed using Chi-square and binomial logistic regression showed that the prevalence of mental fatigue was 32.3%. Operators with moderate stress and working in the pit area demonstrated a significant association with mental fatigue (p-va lue<0.001). Multivariable analysis showed that medium stress (ORadj: 2.11, 95% CI: 1.41 to 3.15) and working in the pit (ORadj: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.45 to 3.57) had a positive association with mental fatigue. Thus, the pit condition and stress levels were the dominant factors influencing mental fatigue and became points to manage mental fatigue in coal mining operators in Kalimantan and Sumatra.

Introduction: Environmental factors such as vibration can affect work fatigue. The previous research results showed that there was a relation between vibration and fatigue, with the use of ergonomic seats by bus drivers. Then conducting experimental research on making ergonomic seat padding made from coconut fiber to reduce the level of vibration and driver fatigue was investigated. The purpose of this research was to analyze the differences in seating vibrations and the bus driver fatigue who did not use a padding seat and one who used it. Methods: The research design was experimental. The research subjects were 42 bus drivers. The vibration intensity was measured using a vibrometer and work fatigue was measured using a reaction timer, then the data were analyzed by T-test. Results: Based on research results the vibration of bus drivers who did not use seat padding was greater than those who did (p=0.001). Those who used seat padding had lower mean fatigue than drivers who did not use it (p=0.001). Conclusion: Vibration and work fatigue in bus drivers who did not use a padding seat was greater than those who used it and the difference was statistically significant. The use of ergonomic seating for bus drivers was very useful for reducing vibration.
