Contributions to the stereochemistry of zirconium oxysalts—part III: syntheses and crystal structures of M2+Zr(SO4)3 with M = Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn and Cd, and a note on (Fe3+,2+,Zr)2(SO4)3 and Fe2(SO4)3

Abstract: The novel compounds M 2+ Zr(SO 4) 3 with M = Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, and Cd as well as (Fe 3+,2+ ,Zr) 2 (SO 4) 3 were synthesized at mild hydrothermal conditions (Teflon-lined stainless steel vessels, 220 °C) from the mixtures of Zr 2 O 2 (CO 3)(OH) 2 , the respective M 2+ (SO 4)•nH 2 O hydrated salts, H 2 SO 4 and a minor amount of water. Crystals up to several tenths of a mm in size were obtained within a few days and studied at 200 K by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. All these compounds belong to … Show more

“…At the time we started our investigations of zirconium oxysalts [1], more than a dozen of purely inorganic zirconium sulfates, but no selenates or selenites had been structurally described in the literature. In the course of our studies [1][2][3] and present work, we were as yet able to synthesize and characterize seven zirconium sulfates as well as seven zirconium compounds containing [SeO 4 ] and/or [SeO 3 ] anions with interesting stereochemical properties. Currently, in continuation of our research program, the investigation of eight new zirconium oxysalts is in progress.…”

“…The presented work is part of long-term investigations on the crystal chemistry of zirconium oxysalts with (XO 4 ) 2− or (XO 3 ) 2− (X = S, Se) anions synthesized under mild-hydrothermal conditions below 250 °C. So far, the compounds Zr(SeO 4 ) 2 •H 2 O and Zr(SeO 4 ) 2 •4H 2 O [1], Zr(SeO 3 )(SeO 4 ), Zr 4 (SeO 3 )(SeO 4 ) 7 , and Zr 3 (SeO 3 )(SeO 4 ) 5 •2H 2 O [2], as well as M 2+ Zr(SO 4 ) 3 with M = Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn and Cd, and (Fe 3+,2+ ,Zr) 2 (SO 4 ) 3 [3] were obtained and structurally characterized in detail. The present part IV of this series of studies deals with the two isotypic compounds Zr 2 (OH) 2 (XO 4 ) 3 •4H 2 O (X = S, Se), as well as with Zr(SO 4 ) 2 •4H 2 O and Zr(SeO 3 ) 2 .…”
