In recent times, there has been increased participation of women in agricultural value chain, but their empowerment status is poor. Thus, evidence-based data revealing the socio-economic status of rural women participating in maize value chain is important to further strengthen women’s participation in the agricultural value chain sector. The study aimed at examining participation in maize value chain and socio-economic empowerment among women in South-west Nigeria. A three-stage sampling procedure was employed in the selection of respondents for the study. The first stage involved proportionate random sampling of three states in South-west, Nigeria. Second stage involved the generation of a sample frame from the various associations of rural women farmers in MVC in the Agricultural Development Programme zones. Last stage, 20% of the total of rural women farmers involved in MVC was selected to give a sample size of 539 respondents. Data were collected through interviewer-administered questionnaire and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings from the study were that the participation mean score of the respondents in marketing and processing were high (71.2%, 73.1%) respectively, the mean participation score in MVC was 67%; respondents’ percentage mean score based on socio-economic empowerment status after participation in MVC was high (60%). Major constraints to participation in MVC activities were high cost of transportation to market (x̄=1.27) ranked 1st and inadequacy of extension service delivery (x̄=1.22) ranked 2nd; and participation in MVC activities had positive and significant relationship with the socio-economic empowerment status of the respondents (r=0.380; p=0.000). The study concluded that the level of rural women farmers’ participation in MVC activities was high and impacted their socio-economic status positively. The study recommended that agricultural extension agency should focus on empowering the rural women by providing extension services needed for market linkage and bulk transportation of produce to target markets.

Rice feeds a lot of people, supports so many agrarians and crucial to our global environment. This study contributes to providing insights into the determinants of rice farmers’ revenue in North – Central, Nigeria, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used in the selection of 995 rice farmers. Primary data were obtained on respondents' characteristics through the use of a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results showed that the majority of the respondents formal education (81.4%). The mean household labour size was 11 persons, household head age was 46.3 years, rice farming was 19.5 years, rice farmland size was 2.6 hectare while the average number of times of extension agents visits was once, credit amount accessed was 0.16 million Naira and the revenue gotten from rice production/hectare was 0.52 million Naira respectively in a planting season. Linear Regression showed that at p < 0.05, household labour size (β = 0.04), household head age (β = 0.05, rice farming years of experience (β = 0.04), number of times of extension agents visits (β = -0.43), number of times of credit access (β = -0.48), credit amount accessed (β = 0.26) and the rice farmland size (β = 0.11) significantly determines rice farmers’ revenue generated from rice production in the area. The study concluded that the characteristics of the rice farmers are an important contributors in determining the rice farmers’ revenue generated from rice production in the area. It was recommended that there should be more consistent visits of the extension agents to the rice farmers and regular credit access to funds for rice production as this will increase their revenue generated from rice production.

The adoption of sustainable practices in decision making in supply chain operations among rice farmers and other stakeholders in Nigeria could be an effective tool to drive food security. The triple bottom line identifies the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability. These could be harnessed to improve the supply chain of locally produced rice, ultimately improving food security in the region. This paper adopts a quantitative method that uses 21 criteria from the three sustainability dimensions to measure rice stakeholders’ decision-making activities against sustainable rice practices (SRPs) using a Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process multi-criteria decision-making approach. The findings reveal that decisions with regard to water usage, supplier diversity, and a safe working environment were ranked high, while government intervention, quality assurance, transparency, and power usage ranked low. This implies that improved performance of other stakeholders across the rice value chain such as the government and extension officers would enhance productivity and drive food security in the region.
