Contributions of Family Leisure to Family Functioning Among Families that Include Children with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract: BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY As chair of the candidate's graduate committee, I have read the thesis of Dorthy C. H. Dodd in its final form and have found that (1) its format, citations, and bibliographical style are consistent and acceptable and fulfill university and department style requirements; (2) its illustrative materials including figures, tables, and charts are in place; and (3) the final manuscript is satisfactory to the graduate committee and is ready for submission to the university library. “…Offer (2013) notes that family activities are practiced more frequently by adolescents who have a good relationship with their parents. Examining this in more depth, other scientific existence (Buswell, Zabriskie, Lundberg & Hawkins, 2012;Dodd, Zabriskie, Widmer & Eggett, 2009;Freeman & Zabriskie, 2003;Hornberger, Zabriskie & Freeman, 2010) confirms a close association between internal family functioning and family leisure. In the future, the influence of internal family functioning on adolescents' physical activity in general and on the physical activities they share with their families in particular should be investigated.…”

“…With the arrival of a child with Down syndrome into the family, roles of all family members are redefined and adapted to the needs of a newborn. Increased emotional, physical and financial demands often influence the functioning and well-being of the family (Dodd, Zabriskie, Widmer & Eggett, 2009). The family has a decisive role in the development of the child, and this role is even more important in the development of children with Down syndrome.…”
