Contribution to the Postglacial History at the Western Margin of Picea abies' Natural Area Using RAPD Markers

Abstract: RAPD analysis was used (1) to assess the diversity of indigenous Picea abies within the French massifs (Alps, Jura and Vosges) in comparison with the Hercyno-Carpathian and Alpine domains (central Europe); and (2) to examine the molecular relationships among provenances of these massifs and domains. One hundred and thirty-seven polymorphic RAPD fragments were screened. Results showed that the phenotypic diversity estimates within the dierent massifs and domains analysed were similarly high. Factorial correspon… Show more

“…The genetic variation pattern detected in the present study is relatively consistent with the general observation that woody species, especially conifers, maintain most of their variation within populations (Hamrick et al 1992, Müller-Starck 1995, Collignon and Favre 2000, Collignon et al 2002, Kraj 2002. However, the degree of population differentiation (Fst = 0.311) observed in P. asperata was quite large when compared with other conifer species (Petit et al 1995, Zheng and Ennos 1999, Salvador et al 2000, Gomez et al 2003, Prus-Glowacki et al 2003.…”

“…Variation in the barcoding loci also evidenced the occurrence of two distinct haplotypes of Taxus baccata in Italy, one shared with other European provenances and a second exclusive of South East Italy. Finally, our results confirmed the genetic diversity existing between Southern and Central Italy provenances of Cupressus sempervirens (Bagnoli et al, 2009), and divergence between Eastern and Western Alps provenances of Picea abies (Collignon & Favre, 2000), as well as between Eastern and Western Mediterranean provenances of P. halepensis (Korol et al, 2002), all previously detected with other molecular markers. Table 2.…”

“…During the last 25 years, molecular tools have allowed studies of neutral genetic diversity across regions (Alps for example) and ranges of tree populations (Comps et al 1991;Müller-Starck et al 1991;Zanetto and Kremer 1995;Collignon and Favre 2000;Scotti et al 2006;Tollefsrud et al 2008;Wagner et al 2012). The main results indicated on the one hand that differentiation among populations was extremely low but on the other hand that intraspecific diversity was high (Hamrick et al 1992;Hamrick 2004;Maghuly et al 2006).…”
