Contribution to the assessment of the power balance at the electrodes of an electric arc in air

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to improve our knowledge concerning the power balance at the electrode surfaces in the case of an electric arc of short duration with a small electrode gap burning in air at atmospheric pressure. With this aim in view, we propose a simple method using the experimental results obtained through the observation of the tracks left by the arc and a numerical simulation of the thermal phenomena occurring in the electrode during the arc heating. This method, based on the analysis of the compati… Show more

“…The concept of volt equivalent of the heat ‡ux to electrode is a popular tool for approximate analysis of plasma-electrode interaction in high-pressure arc discharges; e.g., [20] and references therein and [21] as a more recent example. This concept is based on the assumption that the power input Q from the plasma to the electrode is proportional to the arc current I:…”

“…Another popular tool for approximate analysis of plasmaelectrode interaction in high-pressure arc discharges is the concept of volt equivalent of the heat flux to electrode, e.g. [88] and references therein and [89] as a more recent example. This concept is based on the assumption that the density of the energy flux from the plasma to the electrode is proportional to the local current density:…”

“…The only papers where the previous history of the heat transfer was taken into account are those by Milos and Shepard [25] and by Teste et al [26]. The authors of [25] were focused on maximum temperature, thus the average temperature was not considered.…”
