Contribution to some biological aspects of invasive marbled spinefoot (Siganus rivulatus, Forsskål 1775) from the Turkish coast of southern Aegean Sea

Abstract: Some biological aspects of marbled spinefoot (Siganus rivulatus) were determined from a southern Aegean Sea small-scale fishery. A total of 721 individuals were captured (335 females, 279 males and 87 immature) and sex ratio was found to be 1:1.27, female to male. Total lengths and ages of individuals ranged between 9.0–26.1 cm and 1–9 years. Asymptotic length (L∞), growth coefficient (K) and the theoretical age at zero length (t0) were estimated to be 27.7 cm, K = 0.162 y−1 and t0 = −1.87 y. Length at maturit… Show more

“…As in previous studies carried out in Rhodes (Corsini-Foka et al, 2010;Corsini-Foka, 2010), a positive allometric mode of growth for F. commersonii has been found in other invaded Mediterranean regions (Bariche & Kajajian, 2012;Castriota et al, 2014;Edelist, 2014;Elbaraasi, 2014;Vitale et al, 2016). The results for the two siganids may be compared with those reported in the literature (Taskavak & Bilecenoglu, 2001;Bariche, 2005;Shakman et al, 2008;Ceyhan et al, 2009;Erguden et al, 2009;Corsini-Foka et al, 2010;Başusta et al, 2013;Beğburs & Kebapçioğlu, 2013;Erguden et al, 2015;Soykan et al, 2020). Furthermore, positive allometric growth was observed for T. flavimaculosus from Iskenderun Bay, Turkey (Erguden et al, 2009;Erguden et al, 2015).…”

“…Remarkably, the south Aegean areas where siganids are abundant, are also invaded by a wide variety of alien macrophytes (Tsiamis, 2012;ELNAIS, 2020); this complicates the issue and could lead to changes in the original-native structure of the bio-communities. As already mentioned, siganids are commercially important in the area under study, as in other invaded regions of the eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Israel) (Cerim et al, 2020;Soykan et al, 2020), contrarily to Crete where both siganids appeared later than in Rhodes, at the beginning of the year 2000, and, although common now (Skarvelis et al, 2015), they are still discarded (Authors, pers. comm.).…”

“…SF is a non-predatory herbivore that feeds on algae and seagrasses which make this species at a lower trophic level. Those characteristics explain the significantly low T-Hg concentration (Soykan et al, 2020). T-Hg concentration in fresh SM, an omnivorous species, ranged between 0.004 and 0.014 mg/kg.…”

“…The fish were captured from the depth range of 1-20 m. Data analysis. Growth coefficient (K), asymptotic, length (L inf ), theoretical age at a length of zero (t 0 ), length at maturity for sexes (L m ) (the total length at which 50% of individuals are mature), and the water temperature (T) were 0.162 year -1 , 27.7 cm, -0.10 year, 16.60 cm (female), 16.84 cm (male), and 19.0°C, respectively (Soykan et al 2020). A length-converted catch curve was used to estimate total mortality (Z) (Pauly 1983).…”
