Contribution of three-dimensional images in the planning of cementoblastoma resection

Abstract: Cementoblastomas are rare benign tumours that represent less than 1% of all odontogenic tumours. Complete resection is mandatory to avoid recurrence. This case report describes the contribution of three-dimensional imaging and three-dimensional printing in the pre-operative surgical planning of a large cementoblastoma that not only caused substantial compression on the inferior alveolar and mental nerves, but also caused thinning and partial erosion of the lingual and vestibular cortical bone, thus increasing … Show more

“…Additionally, as observed in other cases reported of cementoblastoma ( 6 , 7 ), the three-dimensional CBCT imaging (Fig. 2 ) provided substantial informations that contributed to appropriate surgical planning of the our patient, including complete removal of the tumor and the decision of the mandibular first and second molars extractions.…”

“…Therefore, the tomographic analysis of cementoblastoma is critical to identify features that are indicative of higher risk of relapse of the lesion. In addition, the imaging analysis of the tumor is required for surgical planning ( 7 ). Although, most of cementoblastomas are treated with conservative surgery including the extraction of involved tooth, an incomplete removal of the tumor can lead to recurrence ( 2 , 3 , 8 , 9 ).…”

“…The density of the radiopaque mass usually obscures the root outline. cementoblastoma, in some can perforate the outer cortical plate without a periosteal reaction [1]. Van Ho stated that cone beam computed tomography helps in surgical treatment planning for cementoblastomas, thereby preventing fracture of mandible during surgical A well-defined radioopaque mass fused with root 37 surrounded by radiolucenct rim.…”

“…removal of such cementoblastomas [1] The differential diagnosis of cementoblastoma includes mature lesions of periapical cemental dysplasia, hypercementosis, dense bone island. The mature lesions of periapical cemental dysplasia often occurs in the mandibular anterior region, whereas the lesions of cementoblastoma usually involves mandibular molar region.…”
