Abstract:This work analyses the contribution of the largest events to suspended sediment transport on the continental scale. The analysis is based on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Suspended Sediment and Ancillary database. Data were obtained from 1314 catchments, comprising more than 2 500 000 daily events. The total number of days in the dataset amounts to 10 000 years. Catchments are of different sizes and belong to distinct climatic environments; they are distributed for the analysis according to USA hy… Show more

Recognition of an episodic response in %&# associated 726 with the largest peak flood flows is similar to the observed dominance of episodic 727 events associated with large pulses of sediment delivery in Mediterranean climate 728 systems (Gonzalez-Hidalgo et al, 2010).…”

“…3b. The adjustment is particularly good for almost all the series, especially during peak flows, which is particularly relevant because of the role that these events play in soil erosion and sediment transport processes (González-Hidalgo et al, 2010). Despite the acceptable performance of the model, a certain underestimation is observed (for example during the event in April 2013).…”
“…Sediment yields from their basins are often highly episodic, caused by rare high discharge floods (Gonzalez-Hidalgo et al, 2010;Wheatcroft et al, 2010).…”
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
