Contribution of Road Transport to Pakistan’s Air Pollution in the Urban Environment

Abdullah Umair Bajwa,
Hassan Aftab Sheikh

Abstract: The urban areas of Pakistan exhibit some of the world’s highest levels of air pollution, primarily due to sub-2.5 μm particulate emissions. This issue significantly impairs both the country’s economy and the quality of life of its residents. Road transport is a significant contributor to anthropogenic air pollution but there are discrepancies about the extent of its share. Source apportionment and sectoral inventory studies attribute anywhere between 5 and >80% of the total air pollution to vehicular source… Show more

“…As previously mentioned, the road transport sector significantly contributes to ambient air pollution in many countries [29][30][31][32][33][34], including Thailand. The main challenge concerning air pollution revolves around the concentration of particulate matter, including particles smaller than 2.5 µm in diameter (PM 2.5 ) and those smaller than 10 µm in diameter (PM 10 ).…”

“…Travel is one of the most frequent activities in a city, playing a fundamental role in facilitating access to the various opportunities inherent in urban life, including employment, access to clientele, and suppliers [1,2]. However, despite its benefits, travel also poses numerous challenges, including traffic congestion, pollution, and road accidents [3,4]. These issues parallel those arising from inadequacies in transportation system planning.…”
