Contribution of Portuguese Vernacular Building Strategies to Indoor Thermal Comfort and Occupants’ Perception

Abstract: Solar passive strategies that have been developed in vernacular architecture from different regions are a response to specific climate effects. These strategies are usually simple, low-tech and have low potential environmental impact. For this reason, several studies highlight them as having potential to reduce the demands of non-renewable energy for buildings operation. In this paper, the climatic contrast between northern and southern parts of mainland Portugal is presented, namely the regions of Beira Alta … Show more

“…However, studies for specific regional contexts are needed so that the accuracy of the results allows a transparent comparison between materials within that context. Moreover, beyond these advantages there are also health and socioeconomic benefits (Berge, 2009;Chandel et al, 2016;Fernandes et al, 2015;J Fernandes et al, 2013;Minke, 2006), since, among others, these materials have low toxicity and the capacity to regulate indoor relative humidity; the valorisation and use of vernacular earthen techniques leads to the need to educate and train skilled construction workers, contributing to preserve local heritage and maintain a cultural legacy; and the local production of materials is economically cheaper, creates jobs and fosters local economies.…”

“…Terranova and Tromble (2017) explain that architectural solutions are often better articulated through understanding its functional and theoretical perspectives in descriptive analyses. An example of the use of case study as a qualitative prescriptive method was Fernandes et al (2015), who confirm the potential of vernacular construction for urban buildings using passive strategies such as the use of glazed balconies as an indoor thermal strategy in different regions of Portugal. The use of case studies enables depth description and comparison of long-term factors as an arguably effective basis to foster architectural vernacularism.…”

“…Although inevitably, some soul-searching among builders and planners have led to the search for traditionalist, vernacular approaches such as passive solar ventilation (Fernandes et al, 2015) and thermal comfort systems (Santamouris, 2007), many modern buildings at present also seem to be at cross purposes with advances in social development. The costs of adapting sustainability strategies for high performance buildings could make them less accessible to social segments other than the elite or are otherwise exclusionary towards the economically and technologically disadvantaged.…”

“…• Recent studies documenting the thermal performance of vernacular architecture in Portugal [60] and the overheating risk using the heating gains coefficient [61] as provided in the current thermal regulation [59], demonstrate that it is possible to achieve indoor thermal comfort by passive means and by the occupants' action during the summer period (see Fig. 8).…”
